Fritzlar ist eine Kleinstadt und ein wirtschaftliches Mittelzentrum im nordhessischen Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. Die Entstehung der Stadt geht auf eine Kirchen- und Klostergründung durch Bonifatius zurück. Die Dom- und Kaiserstadt gilt als der Ort, an dem sowohl die Christianisierung Mittel- und Norddeutschlands (mit dem Fällen der Donareiche um 723 durch Bonifatius) als auch das mittelalterliche Deutsche Reich (mit der Wahl von Heinrich I. zum König der Deutschen auf dem Reichstag von 919) ihren Anfang nahmen. Der Name Fritzlar ist abgeleitet von der ursprünglichen Bezeichnung Friedeslar, „Ort des Friedens“.
