Oppenau ist eine Stadt im Renchtal, gelegen im mittleren Schwarzwald. Sie liegt am Zusammenfluss von Lierbach und Rench in 260 bis 1055 Metern Höhe. Die nächstgelegenen Gemeinden sind talauswärts Lautenbach und Oberkirch, taleinwärts Bad Peterstal-Griesbach. Über die Oppenauer Steige erreicht man Freudenstadt. Die waldreiche Gemarkung – 58,5 Quadratkilometer und damit 80 Prozent der Gemarkungsfläche sind bewaldet – wird von größeren Schwarzwaldbergen begrenzt, darunter Moos (878 Meter), Braunberg (877 Meter) und Kniebis (960 Meter). Der Bereich zwischen den Allerheiligen-Wasserfällen, dem Schliffkopf (1055 Meter) und dem Vogelskopf (1056 m) im Norden der Gemarkung gehört zum Nationalpark Schwarzwald.
